Is Anxiety Consuming Your Life?

photo of a woman sitting at a desk smiling as she is working on a craftDo you find yourself constantly worrying about when the next shoe will drop? Or maybe you have a constant fear that something bad is about to happen? Perhaps this is happening daily and you are not able to shut off your brain.

You may be juggling the kids, house chores, bills, and aging parents. Add to that the struggle with sleep issues, chronic exhaustion, aches and pains—it’s no wonder you’re feeling stressed! Even though your friends and family might call you a “worry wart,” let’s try to understand what’s really happening.

What Else Can Anxiety Look Like In Your Life?

You may constantly worry, feel restless or irritable, have difficulty concentrating, or struggle with sleep. This worry significantly impacts your life, causing distress in areas like school, home, and relationships.

The effects on your life are probably becoming noticeable at this point. You might dread going to work or making presentations, perform poorly in your schoolwork, snap at your loved ones. At the end of the day, you may even blame yourself for your emotions, your actions and their impact on those around you—but you do have allies who understand. With a kind and compassionate Anxiety Counselor, it is possible to live with greater courage, confidence and peace of mind

Anxiety Can Affect Anybody

Anxiety is a normal emotion that we all experience. It acts as a warning signal, preparing us for potential threats or dangers in the future. For example, when you’re anxious about an upcoming exam, it can push you to study harder to pass, which is great!

But when that alarm is constantly going off, and you find yourself in a never-ending state of anxiety, it can be harmful. You might feel paralyzed and unable to focus, leading to poor outcomes which can be very discouraging.

No matter if you’re a busy professional trying to climb the career ladder or a parent juggling home and work life, anxiety can affect anyone. In fact, it’s the most common diagnosis in psychiatry and mental health. Studies have shown that about one in three adults experience some form of anxiety in their lifetime (Kessler et al., 2005).

Why Me? Why Do I Have Endless Worry?

Why does it feel like you’re the one carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders? There could be a few reasons for your constant worries and anxiety:

  • Stressful environment: Your surroundings might be contributing to your anxiety. High-stress jobs, difficult relationships can all play a role in creating a tense atmosphere.
  • Underlying medical condition: Your anxiety could be stemming from an overactive thyroid, chronic pain, heart condition, or alcohol or drug use.
  • Genetic predisposition: Family history might be a factor. You may have noticed relatives like your parents, siblings, or grandparents struggling with similar symptoms, even if they were never formally diagnosed.
  • Past traumatic events: Sometimes, a traumatic experience from earlier in your life can trigger these overwhelming emotions.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey, and understanding the causes of your anxiety can be the first step towards finding relief.

What Does Anxiety Treatment Look Like?

At Brada Clinic, we understand how vital shared decision-making is for achieving the best possible outcomes in Anxiety Treatment. During the Treatment phase, we will discuss the various options available to you, which may include Anxiety Medication, Anxiety Counseling, or a combination of both.

a group of friends sitting around laughing and talkingIf you wish to pursue Anxiety Counseling, we will explore your experience with Anxiety, when it began, look for the roots of it. We may discuss aspects of your background, look at your upbringing, how you were raised, early childhood relationships or any adverse experiences, trauma, and use that to develop a Treatment Plan.

After identifying how Anxiety is affecting you and what the root cause is we can use Anxiety Medication to help you manage symptoms better so that you excel in life and do the healing work of addressing some of those deeper wounds through Counseling.

As your Treatment progresses, shared decision-making continues to be important. You’ll have regular follow-up appointments to evaluate how well the chosen Treatment is working, and you can discuss any side effects or concerns you might have. If needed, adjustments can be made to your Treatment Plan to improve its effectiveness.

Ultimately, shared decision-making empowers you to take an active role in your Anxiety Treatment journey. By working closely with your dedicated team at Brada Clinic and engaging in open, honest communication, you’ll increase your chances of finding the most effective path to managing your anxiety.

Perhaps You Still Have Some Thoughts About Anxiety Therapy

Can I be treated with medications only, since I’m not comfortable sharing my life story?

Anxiety Therapy can indeed be challenging at first, as you might not be used to opening up about yourself or reflecting on the behaviors, actions, and responses that contribute to your anxiety. However, with time, effort, and dedication, you’ll start to see the benefits. To supplement therapy, you might consider using anxiety workbooks or journaling.

What about medication side effects, personality changes, and the risk of dependency?

When it comes to medication, it’s common to have concerns about becoming dependent, personality changes, or feeling “zombie-like.” Some of these fears might be fueled by media portrayals of psychiatry. It’s important to remember that the majority of people who take medication for Anxiety are high-functioning individuals who find it helpful in managing their symptoms and living a more enjoyable life.

Discussing the benefits and risks of any anxiety medication with us before starting is essential. Remember, you always have the option to stop taking the medication under our supervision if you choose to do so.

Many patients report that medications improve their ability to complete projects, experience moments of calm, sleep better, and maintain focus and energy. Most importantly, medications can help you engage more fully in anxiety therapy, allowing you to reorganize the automatic pathways that trigger anxiety and develop healthier, more adaptive responses.

As you embark on your Anxiety Treatment journey, remember that we at Brada Clinic are here to support and guide you every step of the way.
